Lazare de Schwendi, the man of the statue, was an Austrian military man who served Emperor Maximilian II as a colonel of all German troops and who was sent to Hungary to fight the Turks. Later, in 1565 he invaded the fortress of Tokaj, taking with him several barrels of wine as well as strains of these vines that were later replanted in Alsace. Continue reading Colmar #2
