Belfast history and city centre

Belfast é uma cidade que sofreu muito por suas divergências políticas e ideológicas. De um lado estão os protestantes, conservadores e apoiantes do Reino Unido e por outro estão os católicos e separatistas, que sempre se sentiram excluídos e que querem unir-se à Irlanda.

Belfast is a city that has suffered greatly from its political and ideological differences. On one side are the Protestants, Conservatives and supporters of the United Kingdom and on the other side are the Catholics and separatists, who have always felt excluded and who want to join Ireland.

Em 1921 separaram-se ambos os territórios, estabelecendo-se o Estado Livre da Irlanda (actual República da Irlanda) e o parlamento da Irlanda do Norte, incluindo este último seis dos nove condados de Ulster. Estes permaneceram ligados ao Reino Unido. Este tratado estabelecido com os britânicos, provocou uma guerra civil.

In 1921 both territories were separated, the Free State of Ireland (now the Republic of Ireland) and the Parliament of Northern Ireland, including six of the nine counties of Ulster. These remained linked to the United Kingdom. This treaty, established with the British, provoked a civil war.

Mas, já em 1916 durante a semana da Páscoa, se deu a conhecida Revolta da Páscoa, uma tentativa de independência do Reino Unido.

But as early as 1916, during Easter Week, there was the well-known Easter Uprising, an attempt at independence from Britain.

Entretanto, em 1936 o exército republicano irlandês (IRA), que se opunha ao domínio britânico relativamente à Irlanda do Norte e que recorria a métodos terroristas, foi considerado ilegal pelo governo irlandês de Éamon de Valera. Isto provocou uma grande revolta contra o Reino Unido e aumentou ainda mais as divergências entre ambos os grupos.

Meanwhile, in 1936 the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which opposed British rule over Northern Ireland and used terrorist methods, was declared illegal by the Irish Government of Eamon de Valera. This provoked a major revolt against the United Kingdom and further increased the differences between the two groups.

Estes acentuaram-se a finais da década de 60, quando o IRA sofreu novas divisões, e na década de 70 quando a Grã-Bretanha começou a experimentar um declínio social e económico. E foi nesta década que se iniciou um dos conflitos mais sangrentos de todo o mundo, que viria a durar 3 décadas. Quem não se lembra do Bloody Sunday imortalizado na canção dos U2? Na verdade foi um domingo bem sangrento, que resultou na morte de 13 civis pelas mãos da repressiva polícia britânica.

These were accentuated in the late 1960s, when the IRA suffered new divisions, and in the 1970s when Britain began to experience social and economic decline. And it was in this decade that one of the bloodiest conflicts in the world began, which would last for 3 decades. Who doesn’t remember Bloody Sunday immortalized in the song of U2? It was actually a very bloody Sunday, which resulted in the death of 13 civilians at the hands of the repressive British police.

Em 1997 foi declarado um cessar fogo , mas apenas um ano mais tarde foi assinado o Acordo de Belfast, um acordo de paz, onde se estabeleceu a autonomia da Irlanda do Norte. Em 26 de Setembro de 2005 o IRA anunciou o seu fim oficial, entregando todas as suas armas.

In 1997 a ceasefire was declared, but only a year later the Belfast Agreement, a peace agreement, was signed, establishing Northern Ireland’s autonomy. On 26 September 2005 the IRA announced its official end, handing over all its weapons.

Apesar de Belfast ser uma cidade pacífica, ainda se sentem as tensões vividas e as divergências religiosas e políticas um pouco por toda a cidade. Ainda existe um muro que divide ambos os bairros e memórias dos conflitos vividos.

Although Belfast is a peaceful city, tensions and religious and political differences are still felt throughout the city. There is still a wall that divides both neighborhoods and memories of the conflicts experienced.
