Olá olá. Após a nossa estadia no magnífico hotel Castle Dragan, perto de Sligo, seguimos viagem em direção à Irlanda do Norte, comunidade autónoma pertencente ao Reino Unido desde 1921.
Hey, hey, hey, hey. After our stay at the magnificent Castle Dragan hotel near Sligo, we continue our journey towards Northern Ireland, an autonomous community belonging to the United Kingdom since 1921.
Mas, ainda na República da Irlanda, paramos no condado de Donegal e fomos ver as suas preciosas paisagens naturais e as maravilhosas praias, que devido ao mau tempo que aqui faz (inclusive no Verão) estavam vazias. Uma pena, mas valeu pela paisagem!
But still in the Republic of Ireland, we stopped in Donegal County and went to see its precious natural landscapes and wonderful beaches, which due to the bad weather here (even in summer) were empty. Still, I loved the visit.
A independência da Irlanda do domínio Britânico e a criação da República da Irlanda deu-se em 1921. Ainda assim, seis dos condados da Irlanda, na região de Ulster, decidiram permanecer unidos à Grã-Bretanha. Isto foi o motivo de muitos conflitos entre o Exército Republicano Irlandês (IRA) e o exército britânico, que causaram milhares de mortes de um lado e de outro e que segregaram ainda mais os católicos (nacionalistas) dos protestantes.
Ireland’s independence from British rule and the creation of the Republic of Ireland took place in 1921. Still, six of Ireland’s counties in the Ulster region decided to remain united with Britain. This was the cause of many conflicts between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the British army, which caused thousands of deaths on both sides and further segregated (nationalist) Catholics from Protestants.

During the trip to Londonderry, the first stop in Northern Ireland, we didn’t even realize that we had crossed the border! We just noticed that the signs on the highway had changed! (example: the distances are counted in feet and the maximum speed in miles/hour).

Iniciei a minha visita da cidade pelo Guildhall, um edifício em estilo neo-gótico com vitrais fabulosos, de entrada gratuita, onde se pode ver uma exposição sobre a história do condado de Ulster, uma sala principal com um órgão fabuloso e uma espécie de parlamento da região.
I started my visit to the city by the Guildhall, a neo-Gothic building with fabulous stained glass windows, free entrance, where you can see an exhibition about the history of Ulster County, a main room with a fabulous organ and a kind of parliament of the region.
O Guildhall tem uma história conturbada por várias tragédias que foram acontecendo ao longo dos anos . O primeiro edifício, construído no século XVII ardeu ainda na época vitoriana e o segundo também sofreu um incêndio, que queimou tudo menos o relógio da torre. Já este novo prédio sofreu ataques terroristas nos anos 70. Um passado super trágico!
Guildhall has a history troubled by several tragedies that have been happening over the years. The first building, built in the seventeenth century burned down still in Victorian times and the second also suffered a fire, which burned everything but the clock tower. Already this new building suffered terrorist attacks in the 70s. A very tragic past!
Entrei dentro da cidade muralhada e visitei um pouco do centro históricos, vendo alguns dos edifícios emblemáticos de Londonderry (Derry Craft Village, Catedral de S. Colombo, …) apenas por fora.
I entered inside the walled city and visited a bit of the historic center, seeing some of the emblematic buildings of Londonderry (Derry Craft Village, St. Columbus Cathedral, …) just outside.
Depois, subi às muralhas, construídas há mais de 400 anos pelas ordens do Rei James I, e caminhei por cerca de 1,5 km para ter uma vista de toda a cidade e do seu centro histórico.
Then I climbed the walls, built more than 400 years ago by orders of King James I, and walked about 1.5 km to get a view of the entire city and its historic center.
Existem 7 portas de entrada para o centro histórico dentro das muralhas, apesar deste ser bastante pequeno. Aqui existem alguns museus que pode visitar, como é o caso do Free Derry e o Tower Museum, o museu da história de Derry. Infelizmente, eu não consegui entrar pois cheguei mesmo na hora de fecho. Sim, aqui a pontualidade britânica existe!
There are 7 entrance doors to the historic centre within the walls, although this is quite small. Here there are some museums you can visit, such as the Free Derry and the Tower Museum, the museum of Derry’s history. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get in because I arrived at the closing time. Yes, British punctuality exists here!
Das muralhas também é possível ver alguns dos muitos murais da cidade. Mas, recomendo que vá até à zona de Bogside e os fotografe de perto. É uma experiência imperdível!
A maior parte dos murais foram pintados entre 1997 e 2001 e todos abordam temas como a guerra, a paz e os direitos humanos, sendo alguns deles sobre as sangrentas batalhas do IRA nesta cidade, como o conhecido Domingo Sangrento, que deu o mote para a música dos U2. Alguns dos murais mais aplaudidos são o Petrol Bomber, um rapaz com uma máscara de gás, o The Death of Innocence, o Bloody Sunday e o Free Derry, que simboliza a paz que se vive de momento nesta cidade e a vontade de que todo este passado não seja esquecido para que não se repita.
Most of the murals were painted between 1997 and 2001 and all deal with themes such as war, peace and human rights, some of them on the bloody battles of the IRA in this city, such as the known Bloody Sunday, which is the theme of U2 music. Some of the most applauded murals are Petrol Bomber, a boy in a gas mask, The Death of Innocence, Bloody Sunday and Free Derry, which symbolizes the peace that is currently being experienced in this city and the desire that all this past is not forgotten so that it is not repeated.
Tudo isto, e muito mais, são bons motivos para visitar Derry e entender um pouco melhor a sua história assim como todos estes conflitos dentro duma Irlanda dividida!
All this, and much more, is a good reason to visit Derry and understand his story a little better as well as all these conflicts within a divided Ireland!
