Localizado na zona do condado de Clare, a pouco mais de 15 minutos da cidade de Limmerick, a cidade onde dormimos na noite anterior, é facilmente acessível através da autoestrada N18.
Located in the area of Clare County, just over 15 minutes from the town of Limmerick, the town where we slept the night before, is easily accessible via the N18 highway.
O primeiro castelo de pedra neste mesmo local foi construído por Thomas de Clare. Mas, em 1318 foi totalmente destruído numa batalha entre Irlandeses e Normandos. Então, foi restaurado pelo rei de Inglaterra mas foi novamente destruído em 1332 pelos irlandeses O’Briens e MacNamaras. E isto voltou a repetir-se …
The first stone castle here was built by Thomas de Clare. But in 1318 it was totally destroyed in a battle between the Irish and Normans. Then it was restored by the king of England but was again destroyed in 1332 by the Irish O’Briens and MacNamaras. And this was repeated again …
O actual castelo foi construído pela família MacNamara em 1425 e em 1475 tornou-se na habitação do clã O´Brien, que futuramente ganharam o título de Earls of Thomond.
The current castle was built by the MacNamara family in 1425 and in 1475 became the home of the clan O´Brien, who in the future have won the Earls of Thomond title.
Este castelo e suas terras pertenceram a várias famílias. A última foi a família Studdart, que deixou o castelo em 1804 e mudou-se para a casa de Bunrratty, ainda existente no Folk Park. O castelo abandonado ficou, então, em ruínas, e as obras de restauro começaram em 1945.
This castle and its land belonged to several families. The last one was the Studdart family, who left the castle in 1804 and moved into the house of Bunrratty, still existing in Folk Park. The abandoned castle was then left in ruins, and restoration work began in 1945.
O bilhete de entrada dá acesso à fortaleza e ao parque Folk, que é realmente o mais interessante do trajecto, pois é uma recriação de uma povoação irlandesa antiga.
The ticket gives you access to the fortress and to the Folk Park, which is really the most interesting on the way, as it is a recreation of an ancient Irish village.
No castelo também se organizam regularmente banquetes medievais, que acredito que sejam fantásticos. Eu como tinha de seguir viagem nem perguntei por pormenores. Mas podem encontrar aqui mais informações sobre horários e preços.
They organise regularly medieval banquets in the castle. I believe they are fantastic! But, as I had to go on my trip, I didn’t even ask for details. You can check more information about houres and prices here.
O Folk Park é uma recriação de um povoado do século XIX, com casinhas amorosas. Aqui podem encontrar desde pequenas quintas até às casas mais humildes de pescadores, ferreiros, padeiros, de entre outros.
The Folk Park is a recreation of a 19th century irish village with lovely little houses. Here you can find small farms with animals and must more little houses such as the house of the fishermen, the house of the blacksmith, of the baker, among others.
A única coisa de que não gostei foi do intenso cheiro a carvão das lareiras. Mas, antigamente era mesmo assim!
The only thing I didn’t like was the intense smell of charcoal from the fireplaces. But that was the way it used to be!
Ao longo do parque vão encontrando vários atores e figurantes.
Throughout the park you will meet several actors singing and taking care of the animals.
Achei um máximo o pormenor da escada para subir para o quartinho de cima!
I thought it was so funny the detail of the ladder to go up to the upstairs room!
As casas estão cuidadosamente decoradas, como se ainda habitassem aqui pessoas. Reparem nas figuras religiosas que encontramos pelas casas. A Irlanda sempre teve uma grande comunidade de católicos. Por isso as revoltas com o Reino Unido.
The houses are carefully decorated, as if people still live here. Look at the religious figures we find in the houses. Ireland has always had a large community of Catholics. That was the main reason for the rebelions with the United Kingdom.
O parque é longo e por isso vã precisar de fazer pausas, tal como eu. Aproveitem para tomar um chá e uns maravilhosos scones na Tea Room.
